Introduction
Cacaofé s.r.o. was founded in December 2018 as a follow-up to the Kakaw Co+ project led by founder Ing. Martina Matejíčková. Kakaw Co+ was established in 2017 in Mexico and later in Colombia with the aim of linking premium cocoa and coffee with integration activities and social inclusion of former coca growers. In April 2018, the founder brought the project to Slovakia and, under the auspices of activities conducted as a self-employed person, the concept as such was tested in Slovak market conditions, with the import of varietal cocoa from third countries being added to the activities.
The main objectives of the organization are:
The main objective of the regional social enterprise Cacaofé s.r.o. is to integrate people who are more difficult to employ, in particular people with health disabilities, the long-term unemployed, graduates, and people over 55 years of age. These people are on the margins of the open labor market and often also society. The longer their unemployment and professional failure persists, the more their health and general mental balance deteriorates, which can later lead to a general unwillingness to change their situation, as well as their current health and mental state caused by low self-confidence. In the context of social inclusion and work integration, we believe that we will succeed in integrating the above-mentioned categories of people, contributing to the improvement of their mental balance and work habits. The nature of the work activities, such as packaging and warehouse work, has an impact on eliminating stress, as the individual activities will be performed as part of the normal work cycle with a predetermined time frame. In this way, we want to ensure that our employees from among the ranks of citizens who are more difficult to employ acquire skills in the areas of time and quality management, thereby significantly increasing their attractiveness on the labor market with the ultimate goal of successfully placing them in the open labor market.
Year 2024
brought significant changes and shifts in the strategic direction of Cacaofé s.r.o. In addition to sales growth and expansion of our business portfolio, we placed emphasis on expansion, employment, and social responsibility.
In November 2024, we opened a new facility in Prague, which serves as a distribution and production center for the Czech market and the wider Central European region. At the same time, we are actively preparing to open a new facility in Žilina, which will have a strong integration dimension focused on employing disadvantaged people.
In the area of exports, we have begun preparatory steps to enter the markets in Austria and Poland, where we are seeing increased demand for products with ethical origins, artisanal processing, and social impact.
During the year, we also welcomed new members from the deaf community to the Cacaofé s.r.o. team, further strengthening our commitment to inclusion and social entrepreneurship.
Our activities were also positively reflected in the media, including professional articles on the Trend.sk portal, which ranked us among growing and inspiring social enterprises.
Another important milestone in 2024 was the launch of our new e-shop at www.kakawco.sk.
The modern online platform simplified the purchasing process for customers and also made our products more accessible to the general public.
The e-shop offers premium cocoa and chocolate products, gift packages, and materials supporting our mission.
We are also proud to announce that Cacaofé s.r.o. and its founder were recognized in 2024 as part of the prestigious Visa She’s Next program.
This award is given to exceptional women in business who have a positive impact on society, the community, and the market through their activities.
Receiving this award confirms that we are on the right track with our mission and motivates us to continue building a sustainable and socially responsible business.
Meaningful growth: Development and expansion of KakawCo+
The year 2024 was a period of intense development and expansion for Cacaofé s.r.o., not only in Slovakia but also abroad. The company's growth is confirmed not only by the increasing interest in its products, but also by the deliberately built infrastructure, which reflects its responsibility towards customers and employees.
New facility in Prague (11/2024)
In November 2024, we opened a new production and packaging facility in Prague, which serves as a key point for distribution on the Czech market. The facility also enables expansion into Western EU markets and significantly streamlines logistics for supplying Central Europe.
Planned expansion: Žilina, Austria, Poland
- In 2025/2026, we are preparing to open another facility in Žilina, which will serve as a new integrator of production and employment of disadvantaged people in northwestern Slovakia.
- At the same time, negotiations and market research are underway in Austria and Poland, where we are seeing growing interest in ethically produced products and cooperation with regional producers.
Media coverage and public interest
Several Slovak economic and business media outlets, including the Trend.sk portal, have highlighted the KakawCo brand as a positive example of the combination of social entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and a functional export model. A case study of our development was also included among the inspirational stories at professional forums for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs.
Assessment of the achievement of positive social impact for 2024
Kakawco, as a registered social integration enterprise, consistently fulfilled its main mission in 2024 – supporting the integration of people who are difficult to employ – through direct employment, community work, and reinvesting profits back into social activities.
Employment of disadvantaged and vulnerable people
In 2024, we integrated an average of 9 disadvantaged or vulnerable people, including individuals:
- with health disabilities,
- from socially disadvantaged backgrounds,
- or persons with refugee status (Ukraine, Belarus).
These employees were actively involved in product preparation and packaging, logistics, event sales, and customer service. We see their involvement as a key tool for restoring work habits, improving social skills, and building self-confidence.
Pro bono language training
As an additional form of support, we provided free Slovak language lessons for our vulnerable colleagues from Ukraine and Belarus. The aim was to facilitate their integration into the work team and wider society, promote independence, and reduce language barriers in everyday life.
Reinvestment of profits
As a social enterprise, we have fulfilled our commitment to reinvest 100% of our profits back into activities related to our main goal – the integration of people who are difficult to employ. The funds were used for:
- creating new jobs for disadvantaged people,
- purchasing equipment and materials,
- developing the internal team and support programs (e.g., informal education, language courses, personal development).
Measuring quantitative impact
- 9 employees from disadvantaged and vulnerable groups (average during the year),
- creation of job opportunities also through alternative performance – sale of products and organization of guided tastings for companies with more than 20 employees,
- implementation of several events and tastings, which served as a form of income and social activation for our employees.
Measuring qualitative impact
- Employees: Based on informal conversations and feedback from our disadvantaged colleagues, we have observed positive effects on their motivation, mental health, and self-esteem. For many, this was their first positive work experience after a long period of inactivity or uncertainty.
- Public: Through social media, direct conversations with customers, and feedback from events, we have observed a growing understanding and more positive attitude among the public towards people with disabilities. We see these interactions as an important tool for breaking down stereotypes and promoting an inclusive society.
